Hot Dog Park News

Potential Locations for a permanent dog park on City owned property will be presented to the City Commission on March 27th 2006 at 6:30 PM. Like all suggestions some of these locations will be better then others. The actual agenda item number is unknown at this point so it is recommended that you check the City’s Website

http://www.winterspringsfl.org/mayorcommission.html

on March 25th to find-out the details.

Please consider attending this very important meeting. The temporary dog park has many of the basic elements of a wonderful facility. Knowing the City of Winter Springs as I do, the permanent Dog Park will be even better. Your continued support is a major factor in making this happen.

More Dog Park News:

The Winter Springs City Commission Meeting on Monday February 27th 2006 was very lively. Needless to say the City Commissioners were surprised at the turnout and very supportive of continuing the search for a permanent location for the Dog Park. Several suggestions were made as to how to proceed. The short of it is the City is taking a 2 prong approach to this issue:

1) City Staff and the City Commission is going to make their case to the County for establishing a permanent Dog Park at Jetta Point, again. This basically shows the City admits there might be a miscommunication between the two entities. (How refreshing is that, when a government organization says: “Hey, maybe we didn’t do this right the first time.”)

2) The City is going to look at alternative locations on City owned property (including inside Central Winds Park). It would be a shame if the City had to disrupt on going operations in existing facilities. But it goes to show you they are committed to this activity and they have grown to understand it could very well function along side other sporting activities.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS PARK

Temporary Park Approved!

On December 8th 2003 the Winter Springs Commission approved the temporary PawPark on the Wincey property next to Central Winds Park. This location will cease operations on September 30th 2007. However, this should give Winter Springs, Oviedo, and Seminole County ample time to identify and construct a Permanent Facility hopefully near the Black Hammock Trail Head.

The city wants to make it abundantly clear that this is a TEMPORARY site only. Please view the Letter from the City Manager and the Memorandum of Understanding for more detail.

This is a major victory for dog owners in the Winter Springs/Oviedo area! Thanks to the forward thinking of the Winter Springs Commission, we have a reason to "flip for joy". We will continue to work with the City to make the temporary facility both safe and popular while increasing support for a more permanent park in the future.

Plans have already begun on development of a Grand Opening Day Celebration and other fun/fundraising activities to help support the facility. If you would like to be part of this or any other events please contact us.

Special Thanks to all the citizens who have supported getting the park to this point and to the City of Winter Springs Commissioners for recognizing this opportunity and acting on it in so favorable a manner.

Non-Profit (501c3) Status

We are close to obtaining our official status as a not-for-profit corporation. The core team is working on membership applications, fees, and will announce the voting options for paying members of FLOP. We estimate the approval of our 501c(3) status sometime in February. Once we have official corporation status we will be able to start promoting and offering incentives to potentional members and announce elections for the officers of the corporation. Thanks to Greg and Bob for all their hard work on this.

What is FLOP?

FLOP stands for Friends of Leash Optional Parks. We are a group of dog lovers from the central Florida area with a common love of dogs and share a goal of establishing safe, fun and clean Paw Parks everywhere.
